Annie Aldington

ACTOR AND VOICE OVER ARTIST

BACKGROUND STUFF

I was born on a council estate in South London, where the nearest we ever got to a theatre was the panto at Catford Town Hall, and a spot of 'culture', was when Jim Davidson gigged in a boozer down the Old Kent road.
I didn't know a lot about drama schools but enough to know I should go to one,and I managed to audition successfully and started a 3 year acting course.
My plan was to explore all aspects of my craft: rep, fringe, West- End, tv, film, and work my way up that long, long ladder to the top.
Oh well, you win some.....

THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD

During my first year at The Guildford School of Acting, I decided it wasn't for me.I could never quite get my head round prancing about in tights and practice skirts.I seemed to be constantly cast as one of the 'chorus' in yet another Greek Tragedy. While waiting for the good looking bird with the husky voice to declaim her 'Medea',I would be somewhere at the back of the stage, dressed in a sheet with a wreath round my barnet, playing 'corpse' with the other misfits in the group.
I quickly learned that unless I turned into a 'looker' overnight,it was always going to be thus. That, or I'd have to wait to grow into my face to get character parts. So I decided that University might be the better route to take; I could teach if all else failed.
There I discovered the theatre of Brecht and Meyerhold; I started devising and writing my own stuff. Much more up my street and it's what I have continued to do and where I am at my best.

WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW

Ironically, it turns out I needn't have worried. I discovered I had a good face for radio.I have recorded over 300 audio books and am the 'voice'of the author Martina Cole. I have recorded both Sharon Osbourne autobiographies and put my cords to adverts, documentaries, radio plays and poetry for the BBC.
Take a look at my CV (credits), watch my showreel or listen to my voice clips , to get an idea of my work and where I am as a performer. Comedy roles are something I enjoy most; the bigger the better.
At the moment I am working on a theatre piece written for me by the writer Nick Harrison called 'Regarding X', which we showcased last year and are hoping to take onto Edinburgh next year. It's a 'talking head' about a woman reflecting on her marriage to 'X'. It is beautifully written, funny and moving.
I also have my own storytelling performance called 'Victoria and me' (also written by Nick) aimed at year 5 and 6 pupils, museums and galleries. I also co- run drama workshop's for children (Actup) at Ripley Art's Centre,Bromley.
