| | VICTORIA AND ME
A STORYTELLING PERFORMANCE.
WRITEN BY NICK HARRISON PERFORMED BY ANNIE ALDINGTON
'You'd think the world had finished out there.I suppose for a some it might as well have done-given that Queen Victoria has finally been taken from us.Even London Bridge looked sad in the winter sunshine just now-Its supporting arches standing glum and rigid like a row of downturned mouths'
The date is January 22nd 1901-an icy morning in a drafty, dingy east end tavern.
Barmaid Rose-gritty and wholesome-should be preparing the pub for opening, but a hard day's graft is the last thing on her mind following a treacherous commute amidst the echoes of the city's news-stand vendors announcing the death of Queen Victoria.
A sombre mood grips London
Alone in the tavern and despite the threat of her brutish boss 'the govenor' arriving at any moment,Rose begins to reflect on Queen Victoria's life and reign.
Rose's anecdotes unravel with warmth and good humour as she references historical milestones like The Great Stink alongside insights into Victorian life, particularly for the poor.
This is an original storytelling performance created specifically to develop a child's interest in of one of the most fascinating topics on the National Curriculum.
An intimate piece pitched at years five and six, 'Victoria and Me' will complement an upper key stage 2 history lesson or an extra-curricular activity such as History Club.It would also be suitable as a storytelling performance in museums, galleries, National Trust or English Heritage houses.
The performance lasts approximately 45 minutes including a post-performance question and answer forum.
